Fasting helps to declutter and detox the body, mind, and spirit to make room for God’s presence. As fasting empty’s us, prayer is what God uses to fill us back up.

What is prayer?

Prayer is simply a two-way conversation between you and God. It is the foundation of any good relationship; communication. Not only do you get to talk with God but you get to listen to God.

Prayer Tips

  • Set a time.

    Let’s be honest, life gets crazy. You’re prayer time will be most effective if you are intentional with your time. Jesus prayed often but He had an early morning appointment with God often. Make a daily appointment with God whether it’s first thing in the morning, at lunch, or in the evening and faithfully keep it.

  • Set a place.

    Jesus had a specific place He went to pray. Having a designated place to pray helps us remove distractions and frees us from the anxieties of the world. Whether it is the car, the closet, the park, or the living room faithfully go there.

  • Set a plan.

    When Jesus taught His disciples to pray He gave them a plan, an outline of sorts, the Lord’s Prayer. As we pray everyday our plans for our prayer time can vary, it doesn’t have to look the same everyday. What are you going to pray for? Is worship music involved in this time? What is fasting?

  • eliminating something from your life for a specific time (1 meal, or 1 habit, for 1 day, 1 week etc.) and for a specific purpose (to grow closer to God, or to receive direction, or in seeking a specific request from God). In Biblical times fasting most often involved praying at the time where you would normally have a meal. There are many different types of Biblical fasts

  • Fasting is a spiritual discipline that is taught in the Bible. In other words, God instructs us to fast. Jesus expected His followers to fast, and He said that God rewards fasting.

    1. Obedience to God will grow my relationship with God. Which, brings me closer to God.

    2. I will be able to hear God’s voice more clearly. Which gives me clarity of purpose and identity.

    3. I will be better equipped to resist temptation. Which gives me confidence and purity.

    4. It helps me regulate my soul (mind, will, emotions). Which gives me sanity, and equips me to serve others.

    5. it helps me regulate my physical body. No longer controlled by my urges, but in control of the identity and purpose God has for my life.

Matthew 6:16-18.

“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Types of Fasts

 

Partial Fast

  • Fasting one single meal a day

  • Fasting certain times of the day

    • Sun up to sun down

Soul Fast

  • Fasting from a habit or routine

    • Coffee, alcohol, electronics, social media, tv, sports, makeup, physical intimacy, podcasts etc…

Selective Fast or Daniel Fast

  • You choose dietary restrictions.

  • Exemplified by Daniel: What you can eat:

    • Fruit, nuts, vegetables & water

  • What you do not eat:

    • Meats

    • Pastries, chips, bread

    • Fried food

    • Coffee, tea, soda, juice

Complete Fast

  • Water only*
